T.E.C.H. Guide - How to configure a Cisco ASA 5505 for VoIP We had an issue with a VPN-connected IP phone to a central NEC SV8100. The VPN was between two Cisco ASA Firewalls. Our IP phone was receiving some packets that had SIP headers that included the external IP of the SV8100 rather than the internal IP, as it should have been. This was causing random Logoffs of the phone. Cisco VPN Client Configuration - Setup for IOS Router Remote VPN clients will obtain an IP address that is part of our internal network (see diagram above - 192.168.0.x/24) so we therefore do not require this virtual interface to have an ip address and configure it as an 'ip unnumbered' interface on our router's LAN interface.
The remote side is setup to allow the 'phone' interface (security level 0), 172.16.2.0/24 to access the remote phone system IPs, 192.168.35.10 and 192.168.65.11. The VPN is up, and it shows data as coming across, however, the phone doesn't connect to the IPs.

Once you have the Cisco IP Communicator installed, follow the steps below to find learn how to connect and configure while off campus. (Though this article will refer to connecting off-campus, the IP communicator can be used on campus in lieu of the physical phone. Simply skip the step about connecting to VPN).
